Sea & Garden Pottery

  • Sea Pottery & Garden Pottery

On my travels looking for Seaglass and working as a Gardener in Cornwall, I've found hundreds of pieces of pottery along the way ..and theyre so different!

  • Sea pottery (also known as "sea china" or "sea porcelain" or "beach pottery") is pottery which is broken into worn pieces and shards and found on beaches along oceans or large lakes. Sea pottery has been tumbled and smoothed by the water and sand, creating small pieces of smooth, frosted pottery. It is often collected with more common sea glass by beachcombers.

Sea pottery -  originates from pottery, including earthenware, stoneware and porcelain which breaks into smaller pieces and is smoothed by the acidity and motion of an ocean or lake, the sand or grit polishes the edges like a natural tumbler. Much of the sea pottery in the United Kingdom and United States originated from discarded 18th and 19th century porcelain made in Europe and America. Some sea pottery contains discernible patterns, such as flowers, figures, historic places and scenes, or hallmarks, factory stamps and dates which allow the pottery to be dated using pottery reference guides.

  •  In Victorian times the 'Willow' blue & and white pattern pottery was produced by every major pottery producer. It was produced on such a mass scale it was affordable to almost every Victorian household.

So how did it end up in gardens? Broken plates would be used as drainage in the bottom of pots in the garden and eventually contents would be tipped into the garden and ultimately buried…only to be dug up again in the 21st century!

The Cornish walls here were actually made hollow and broken glass and pottery would be thrown in the middle due to the rag'n'bone man not collecting this sort of waste.

It is also said that the pottery was offerings to the little people as trinkets to stop them from tinkering with farm machinery and ruining crops!

All pieces of Sea or Garden pottery pieces found are photographed as found for prosperity and identification.

Pottery pieces are only cut, shaped and polished for specific jewellery pieces.
